Alphorn in concert & 432Hz
A giant with an extraordinary voice
Great University Hall, Salzburg

“Many years ago I was in the Alps and I saw an alphorn in a small shop in the mountains. I tried to play it and… it was love at first sight!”
- Carlo Torlontano

A concert with an experience value in two respects: On the one hand, Carlo Torlontano brings us the alphorn, which was traditionally used by the shepherds and for signal transmission and which is still a rarity in the concert halls of this world. Certainly for most of them, this is the first opportunity to experience this instrument with an orchestra. But anyone who thinks that this concept is completely new is mistaken: Leopold Mozart wrote a "Sinfonia pastorella" for shepherd's horn and strings, as we shall hear. The soloist is particularly fascinated by the feeling of peace and tranquility that the instrument spreads with its vibrations.
On the other hand, the natural, non-tempered tuning of the alphorn inspired Elisabeth Fuchs to play with the listening habits of the listeners. Therefore, the instruments on this evening are tuned much lower than usual today, namely at 432 Hertz. An experiment that allows the audience to explore the effects of changing concert pitch.
