Matthias Bartolomey plays Haydn's Cello Concerto
Art! Who understands it? With whom can one discuss the great goddess?
– Ludwig van Beethoven
L. v. BEETHOVEN · Overture to Egmont, Op. 84
J. HAYDN · Cello Concerto No. 2 in D major, Op. 101, Hob. VIIb:2
L. v. BEETHOVEN · Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67
The year 2027 marks the 200th anniversary of the death of the great German composer Ludwig van Beethoven. Beethoven shaped and transformed music history – as a revolutionary who broke the shackles and forms of classical music, and as a "master of the symphony" who perfected the genre and thus presented entire generations of subsequent composers with new artistic challenges. To mark this anniversary year, the Philharmonic Orchestra will perform his Egmont Overture and his 5th Symphony, which, with its world-famous opening motif, is one of the most influential and important works of classical music. In between, the orchestra, together with Matthias Bartolomey, will perform the cello concerto by Beethoven's pupil Joseph Haydn, who was taught by the great master between 1792 and 1794.
