A. ZEMLINSKY - The Mermaid, orchestral fantasy based on a fairy tale by H. C. Andersen
S. RAKHMANINOV
- Symphonic Dances, op. 45

Rachmaninov described the Symphonic Dances as his last spark, as they were his last composition - and therefore a very personal work. The movements entitled Noon, Dusk and Night can be understood as a flashback to his own life. Zemlinsky's Mermaid also provides insights into the composer's inner life. As in most of his works, the motif of tragic love plays the main role here.
A homage to his futile love for Alma Mahler?
