The Salzburg Philharmonic was founded in 1998 by conductor Elisabeth Fuchs. The repertoire includes, among others, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Mahler, Stravinsky, Britten, John Adams, Arvo Pärt and Fazıl Say. In the crossover area, the Philharmonic impresses with projects such as: Everyone Reloaded, Hello Salon Symphonique, Best of Hollywood, A Symphonic Tribute to ABBA, QUEEN & The BEATLES, Mambo in Concert and Symphonic Alps with Herbert Pixner.

The orchestra plays with top soloists such as Juan Diego Flórez, Pumeza Matshikiza, Rolando Villazón, Rainhard Fendrich, Conchita Wurst, Monika Ballwein, Sergey Malov, Alina Pogostkina, Benjamin Schmid, Ferhan & Ferzan Önder, Olga Scheps, Fabio Martino, Galina Vracheva, Radovan Vlatković, Andreas M. Hofmeir, Pacho Flores, Manuel Randi, Herbert Pixner, Henry Threadgill, the Klazz Brothers, Quadro Nuevo, Salut Salon, Frederic Böhle, Hans Sigl and Philipp Hochmair.

In 2023, the orchestra was awarded the coat of arms of the state of Salzburg on the occasion of its 25th anniversary.

The Salzburg Philharmonic Orchestra plays in ensembles of 30 to 130 musicians and is also home to the choir and chamber choir of the Salzburg Philharmonic Orchestra as well as the Salzburg Children's and Youth Philharmonic Orchestra.
