Standing ovations in the sold-out Elbphilharmonie
The Salzburg Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir performed twice in the Elbphilharmonie last Sunday. Twice the concert hall was sold out, twice the musical performance was honored with jubilant standing ovations. Over 200 musicians from Salzburg took to the stage of the renowned concert hall to perform Beethoven's Ninth. It was palpable, Beethoven's message of community and cohesion. The choral movement in the finale was bursting with strength and hope as the 150 singers and the high-ranking quartet of soloists - Ursula Langmayr, Christa Ratzenböck, Bernhard Berchtold and Rafael Fingerlos - proclaimed Friedrich Schiller's "Ode to Joy". But the quiet tones were also convincing, especially in the finely balanced 3rd movement, the Adagio: here the radiant woodwinds were in dialog with the velvety, warm-sounding strings - a blissful musical experience, interpreted by Elisabeth Fuchs like a prayer.
The re-invitation to the Elbphilharmonie has already been extended by the organizer. For now, the Philharmonie Salzburg and choir are looking forward to three more almost sold-out concerts in the Grosses Festspielhaus (October 23/24).
