Born in Guadeloupe, Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, was not only an outstanding violin virtuoso and composer in late 18th century Paris. He also excelled as a successful fencer and was Marie-Antoinette's favorite musician. As a composer of operas, symphonies, concertos and string quartets, he celebrated successes that Mozart was denied in France during his lifetime. His symphony opens the concert evening, followed by Mozart's Sinfonia concertante, performed by the married couple Meesun Hong and William Coleman. Beethoven's Eroica brings the evening to a crowning conclusion.
